OutReach Opportunity for Church Organists (OROCO)
This scholarship program is for organ study, with an emphasis on preparing students to become a church or synagogue organist.
All candidates are welcome to apply.
Students and adults of all ages are encouraged to apply, and individuals with considerable piano study are especially encouraged. Awards are made with no regard for religious affiliation, race, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Candidates are interviewed by NEWAGO and will be asked to play one solo piano piece. Candidates may also be asked to sight read music, including a hymn, to be played on the piano.
Scholarships provide one year of organ study.
Lessons are provided by a teacher approved by NEWAGO, and will be as near to the student’s geographic location as possible. Scholarships may be renewed for additional years at the discretion of the teacher. Scholarship funds are paid directly to the teacher by NEWAGO. Teachers and students work together to schedule lesson times and locations.
Successful candidates must practice.
Students must arrange for adequate time to practice on an acceptable instrument that includes a full pedalboard of at least 30 notes. This is typically done at the student’s home congregation, although NEWAGO can assist applicants in obtaining access to a suitable instrument. Students are expected to make time for several hours of practice between lessons.
